Throughout 2005, Bradford's Action for Boys' Achievement
programme offered INSET and resources to a number of schools where attainment by boys had,
in recent years, been below national average (APS across all core subjects) and where
there was a statistical gap boys and girls. The pilot programme aimed to remove the
barriers to learning that were preventing boys achieving their full potential. Thirteen
primary and nine secondary schools took part in the initial work in 2005.
A year later, with additional DfES funding, the project is being extended to every school
that opts into the programme comprising five INSET strands, each of which addressing a
specific theme.
This year, 2006, Emotional Literacy for Boys has been added as a new strand in the
programme and TalkiT is being used as a major part of the work to develop boys' social and
emotional skills.
