TalkiT is designed to provide the basis for an interactive discussion around Emotional Literacy.

Software
The TalkiT software has several 'user levels' from an individual pupil user, through staff access to tutor groups, with administrator access to the entire database.

Individual users score themselves using a Likert-type scale against a range of statements to do with:

  • Self-awareness – including confidence, shyness, optimism, imagination, truthfulness and honesty or integrity.
  • Self-control – which relates to coping with anger and frustration
  • Motivation – including staying on track with school expectations and keeping going in the face of difficulty or boredom
  • Getting on with others – including, working together, fitting in and good communication
  • Understanding others – includes empathy as a measure of seeing the world from another person’s perspective and being helpful, which is a person’s actions resulting from being empathic.

The work has two aspects to it. The first is the internal, personal developmental work which Howard Gardner would call intra-personal intelligence (Gardner, 1983). It is about understanding myself and begins with receiving accurate feedback from a number of people including the student him/herself. Increased self-awareness is essential to self-control. The second aspect is the student’s relationship with the external world, involving the ability to understand other people and to get on with them. All four of these domains have an impact on the student’s motivation to change and develop as an efficacious and socially aware individual.

The programme provides the opportunity for self-profiling and for peers, teacher and even a family member to add their perceptions so that the pupil can receive feedback from all different perspectives in their lives. Trials and experience with the program have shown that the graphical outputs provide an excellent starting point for discussion about personal awareness, social skills and the qualities that lead to more successful life at school.
